Now I have too much freedom.

Okay, after a few days of admittedly awful blog posts, I have every intention of sitting down to write a serious blog post. But I can't think of a damn thing to write about.

I think this is one of the reasons I blog so infrequently. I rarely, if ever, feel like I have anything of any particular note to say. I guess with all the other outlets that exist (Facebook, flickr, Twitter, Yelp, google reader), I've gotten used to communicating in snippets, 140-ish characters, and photos. I mean, I spend most of my day learning or studying, riveting conversations are far from common.

And I wonder why I have a hard time talking sometimes.

Well, it's a Friday night, I had to leave my previous study den because they were having a casino night there (yes, a normal person may have stayed). So I sit at a local coffee shop listening to the most mentally unobtrusive music I have while pondering what to do with my future (both long term as well as the upcoming summer).

What to do with my life? Endocrinology seems like it might be interesting. It seems that, like oncology (another interest of mine), it might be too much research though. I'm kind of over working in labs. My masters program at RPCI was pretty awesome, but the research end is not exactly where I want to be. Radiology? I'd do it in a heartbeat but, damn, is it hard to get in to.

Hrm, I suppose if I do want to be a radiologist. Or to even pass medical school, I should get back to work.

Well, it's another rambling, but slightly more coherent post. Good gods, my grammar is suffering too. I used to be a decent writer.

Okay, I'm not really motivated to talk about the places I've lived. I've lived a few places and they're all pretty interesting. But, as I suspect, only to me.

Instead....well, I don't really have a good topic to blog about. And I'm not really in the "writing" mood. It's funny, really, but I feel really motivated to work on memorizing the structures of the brain right now. Obviously, studying isn't something that most people find "fun", but somehow people enjoy learning. I suspect it comes from a certain distaste for being forced to study certain things rather than a free form study-whatever-you-want.

Good gods, I think my writing is actually getting worse. This does not bode well for the next ten days...

Argh! Actors! Pop culture! One of the subjects I am wholly ignorant upon.

I know I have friends who act. Hell, my girlfriend acts. But I have to say, I despise the hollywood/music/sports star-obsession that goes on.

I've tried to formulate just how much I hate it, but I just can't put it into words. They're a bunch of people who get way too much money and attention for doing jack-shite. Some of them run around a patch of land doing things with other guys (usually). Some of them play pretend in front of a camera and are really just puppets with dozens of hands up their ass. Seriously, though; writers, producers, and cameramen do the real work. Your average hollywood starlet is just a vapid painted face that can do what they're told well. You know what, there are plenty of hookers that can do the same. And don't pull any of that "piece of work" crap on me. Any schmuck can jump in and out of character if someone can yell "cut" if things go wrong. You know what kind of actors impress me? Those that perform live theater. Okay, improv comedians are the most impressive. Well, the good ones, anyway. If you have to do that crap live, I'm a little more impressed. And I won't even start on the musician image.

Okay, I gotta stop ranting.

I just think there are a lot of other places money should go than to 70 year old artists who charge over $100 dollars a seat for their shows.

Maybe if a quarter of it went to teachers, people wouldn't have to put these asshats up on pedestals.

No more ranting, I'm barely coherent now.

Anyway, anyone who has seen my Twitter feed (link in the sidebar) has
probably seen me rant about coffee lids. Suffice it to say, I think
that coffee lid technology is way behind the times. I hate walking
around or taking a turn when driving and having the coffee splash out
the OPEN lid on these things.

Anyway, it finally occurred to me how to fix this.

It's Day 4 of BBPF9 and I'm skipping class to write this blog entry.

Okay, that's not wholly true. I'm skipping class because I really don't want to listen to another lecture on immunology that I heard slightly less than a year ago back at UB. That being said, I'm not going to brag about being smart or getting into medical school. The first is only true for a certain, very specific value of "smart", the latter not being that difficult (there are plenty of schmucks here and in the professional field). While I'm also pretty good on the minigun in Gears of War, I don't really think I need to brag about that (it's just obvious). I'm realizing I'm good at networking and organization of groups of people, but it's still a new and fairly ephemeral talent and I can't blog about it. So what can I brag about?

I am a damn good photographer.

This is my friend Pam. Pam is trying to decide if she's going to donate her hair to Lock of Love. She wants to, but being here, in line for the stylist to put her under the scissors? It's not so easy. So Pam debates.

See? You see all of that in the photo. I'm not the most creative photographer, but I feel I'm good at getting images of people. It's a talent that's earned me quite a bit of fame and recognition around here (and now, some $$$ too). I like it. I'd never want to do it for a living, but I'm good and I'm damn well gonna brag about it.

It's funny (to me) that Garvey's topic today is about food. See, I like food. I like it a lot. I do sometimes consider myself a "foodie", as my interest for food often overtakes my interest for, say, studying. The reason it amuses me is that I was just talking about the perfect meal with my friend.

Why is this funny? Because we were at the Olive Garden at the time.

Okay, maybe it's not "ha ha" funny. Shut up.

As a rule, I don't like chain stores of any sort. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but I suspect my barely subconscious desire to not follow the herd or conform has something to do with it. What struck me is that at one point, the Olive Garden probably wasn't a big company with a hundred restaurants in every city. Same with Starbucks. Same with Target. What I wonder is what they were like back before they were huge companies. I like italian food. I don't think tOG counts as real italian food though. That may be unfair, as it really can't be classified as anything else. It just makes me wonder how things got the way they are now and how it changed along the way.

I'm rambling now. I suspect my brain is still a little pickled from last nights escapade in downtown Phoenix.

Anyway, my perfect meal? Cheese and peperoni pizza. NY style. On a patio. Probably with a beer of some sort (I love wine, but for "perfect" I think beer couples better). Thing is, I'm not wholly sure where/what that patio looks out on. Guess I'll have to figure that out in time.

So, here I lay. My back and legs dully aching after my 35 mile bike
ride. My cat having decided my torso is a fine place to lie down as
well. I figure: I'm mostly immobilized, might as well start that whole
bloggery thing I agreed to do.

1- I assume the first big thing that's gone on with me this year, most
of my 2 readers are aware of. I've moved to sunny AZ for medical
school. Thus far, I can quite easily say I have no regrets about it.
The sun and focus on what I want to be doing has helped make me a much
happier person than I was.

2- I just did a charity ride to raise money for diabetes.
Distance: 37.7 miles
Time: 2:16:01
Max speed: 28.4 mph
Avg speed: 16.6 mph
Max rpm: 188
Avg rpm: 74

3- In addition to the obvious "what do I want to be if/when I complete
medical school", I'm trying to figure out what to do with this
upcoming summer, as it's my last free one for some time. Travel would
be awesome, shadowing a physician would be ideal, but Diane wants me
to spend it back in Buffalo with her. I really don't know what I
should do, but I know I'll have to pay rent out here anyway.

I've been writing. I really have. I swear! See, I had really wanted to start writing stuff. Anything, really. I just wanted to try and work out a part of my mind/thinking process that I hadn't used in a while. My great plan had been to write reviews of podcasts I listen to. Maybe even....well, that's about all of interest I could review.

Then it occurred to me: there IS something relevant I could review. Food! I love food. Thing is, the best place to review food is a place where other people go to look for said reviews. In this case Yelp.

So it's been some time since I had any real commercial success with my photography (which is a shame, I know). I've done some stuff for newspapers, publicity stuff, a few headshots. And then a few days ago, I get an email requesting the rights to use my photo in a book about Buffalo. Apparently someone liked this photo enough to A) pay me nicely for the rights to use it and B) include it in a limited-run book to be on display at the office of the mayor of Buffalo. Pretty cool, right?

Anyway, just thought I'd delay my studying for a bit to toss that speck of interest out there. I think there's another photo or two in queue to follow this. So, keep posted.

Well lookee here. I found a dashboard widget that links to my blogger account so I don't have to go through that whole hassle of "signing in" to make a post on my blag.

Maybe it will help, maybe not. We'll see, I suppose.

AZ is pretty perfect, in my opinion. I'm biased, and probably still excited about living somewhere new, but it has a lot going for it. Decent economic growth, steady influx of residents, ideal weather (dry heat is far better than the other kind), and such a diverse ecosytem that it still boggles my mind.

Of course, it's not all roadrunners outside my window in the morning and studying in the sun on the patio. Strangely, they don't seem to have any recycling program out here. Grocery stores out here are okay, but nothing compared to Wegmans.

Oh, and the internet sucks out here. But I think that's a problem with Qwest. More on that later.

Time to be a student doctor.

So yeah, I really enjoy the convenience and utility of Twitter. It's simple. It's travels with me; I can update it from my chat client or my phone via SMS. My Buffalo Bucket List

So I've been thinking a lot about leaving lately. Not that I've had anything else to do. My research is stuck in red tape again. No hours available at work. Don't really feel like packing yet. But I digress...

I'm sure anyone who reads this is probably sick to death of me saying how excited I am to move to Arizona. If you're not then you're probably at the wrong blog. It's okay, just move along. Well, I thought I should take a break from singing the praises of the Valley of the Sun to reflect on what I still have to do in Buffalo. See, as much as I bitch about it, I really do like Buffalo. The city and the region are great. It's the weather that sucks, and it kind of ruins my appreciation of it sometimes.

So last night I decided that I could compile my Buffalo bucket list. Lifted from the movie of a similar title, I'm going to compile a list of things I need to do before I kick the Buffalo bucket. Suggestions are welcome, nay, encouraged. I'm sure you know things that should be experienced that I may have overlooked. I guess by necessity, this is going to be a work in progress. We'll see how much I get done by August.

So, without further ado, my Buffalo Bucket List:
(in no particular order)

-visit the Darwin Martin House again
-eat Anchor Bar wings at the Anchor Bar
-see another Bison's game
-go to the walkway under Niagara Falls
-visit the new Canadian casino
-eat at Buffalo Chophouse OR Rue Franklin
-visit the beach
-see the old house I used to live in
-go to the Buffalo Zoo
-see one more (probably terrible) Shakespeare in the Park performance
-find a good place for a beef on weck
-go to Duffs again

Well, I'm sure there's more, but I can't come up with anything significant. Anyone out there in the Buffalo region of the Blogosphere have any suggestions?

This just makes me mad. I was going to say that I can understand why people may want this or be afraid of terrorist doing research about targets this way, but then I realized that even if you DO ban photography of certain places or things, it won't help. First off, cameras are getting smaller and smaller every day. Even my Nikon D80, which is twice as powerful as my old D70, is half of it's size. So banning overt photography just means you get a fancy hat with a camera built into the New Era logo. (Note to self: inquire with Peter about bringing this sort of thing about..) Then there are people who say you can't photograph their building because it's theirs (this happened to me outside the M&T building downtown). I simply call bullshit on that because of the concept of "public space" that these buildings occupy. You own the block around it? Great. But do you own the photon bouncing off the building? You do? Well I can't be held responsible of they bounce off your building and into the open aperture of my camera. It is ri-god-damn-diculous.

Fuck London and NYC and all their paranoid anti-terrorist bullshit. How many more freedoms are we going to give up out of fear?

The writer of the article that brought this to my attention had a good line, "London's posters discriminate against large groups of people, reinforce bad stereotypes about photographers, and ironically chip away at the freedoms of that country's citizens in the name of fighting terrorists who President George W. Bush likes to say 'hate our freedom'."

BufBloPoFo Day 9 (sure, I'll try this one)

As anyone who checks this blog will know, I am in no way a prolific enough blogger to attempt this whole BufBloPoFo thing, but I have been following it. So, when I saw the topic about Buffalo, I thought I'd give it a try.

See, I'm leaving Buffalo at the end of August to go here. I can't really say for sure when, or even if, I will return to the land of my birth. I mean, I'm not a sea turtle or a salmon. No great need for me to come back to this abysmal cold. Regardless, the whole leaving thing has made me really take stock of Buffalo and the things I'll miss here. You'll notice cold and snow are conspicuously absent.

First and foremost, I love the variety of food we have in Buffalo. I am something of a gourmand and am consistently delighted by all the options in this fair city. Want ethnic food? India Gate, Falafel Bar, and Saigon Cafe all have my vote in their respective categories. For brunch, I have to cast my vote to Betty's. I was there recently and had what I can only describe as THE perfect piece of toast (I like toast). I'm torn as to what else I can really recommend though. Not because everything else is bad, but because everywhere I've frequented has been so damn good. Some of the places I will miss: Founding Fathers, Gabriel's Gate, Pearl St, Mother's, Left Bank, Cafe Aroma, Buffalo BBQ & Brew, Allen St Hardware, and my new favorite: North. By the by, North might be a good alternative to Founding Fathers, if one is ever needed. The bartender (and part owner, I think) Sam, knows his stuff. I think he also bought Diane and I more than a few drinks last night. They have good food, two televisions that were showing the Sabres game, and most importantly, it was fairly calm.

Oh yeah, and for wings: Duff's are the best.

Luckily, there's more to Buffalo than food. I love summer when we have all the street fests. Sure, the art festivals have become craft festivals, but the people watching can't be beat. Delaware park and Hoyt lake are great to wander around. What we consider "traffic" is laughable in comparison to a lot of places. Niagara Falls really is spectacular.

No matter what, I'm sure I'm going to miss the familiarity of it. It'll be a great adventure in AZ, but I will certainly remember where I came from.

My sister graduated from high school. Well, she graduated from the grades that would have consisted of high school had she been enrolled in such an institution. My sister, along with all of my brothers, were home schooled. So I wonder if "high school graduation" is entirely appropriate.

Took advantage of the nice weather to bike over to Forest Lawn with Joe and Peter so I could snap some photos. I forgot how much fun it is to bike around. I also forgot how much I like wandering through Forest Lawn. I swear the place is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. As we were leaving, I came across a stream that will need to be explored sometime soon. Something to look forward to after finals are completed. The bike gang will ride again soon.

I really love Buffalo summers. As much as I bitch about the cold, it really is worth it for when the weather gets nice like this. I love how it suddenly springs to life around here and there are suddenly people everywhere. I don't know if it's like that in other places, but it feels like the population of Buffalo suddenly quadrupled. So many people rush outside as soon as the weather turns nice, it's great.

Speaking of, between the bike, the excellent new camera bag, and the fact that this camera hasn't yet seen its first summer, I have a feeling there will be much more posted here in the upcoming months. Maybe I can make this blog thing last.

Anyway, I've been wanting to print out my own photos to adorn my walls for some time now (I figure I should put up my own prints over other people's photos considering all the time I waste taking them in the first place). Thing is, I really want to see one of my photos printed out really big. I'm debating between this one above, the 3 Graces, or the California Mountain panoramic (both below). Of course, mounting will probably cost a fortune, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Why the hell is there a very large bird at the end of my street?!? Is it a turkey, a peacock, or Seefur dressed up like a bird to mess with my head?

So this is the sight that greets me a few moments ago when I open my blinds. It honestly took me a moment to register what, exactly, I was seeing. It appears to be the os coccyx (or possibly the scapula) of some animal. What mystifies me the most is exactly how it got up here. I mean, I live on the second floor, so the list of possible culprits is limited.

Peter has a post about a strange scavenger that he suspects has followed him to this house and is now leaving food to make up for it's past thieving ways.

I'm just too tired to be confused about it right now.

I know it's Buffalo and a cold view like this isn't unheard of this far into the year, but if it doesn't warm up soon I'm gonna have some words with whatever snow demons are causing this. You see skies like this in the dead of winter, not early spring.

Okay, so I'm really going to try and keep this blog up. I need to think of it like working out. I need to keep taking photos to get better at it, right?

Anyway, even though I said I was done taking photos of the cat, I guess I was mistaken. This will hopefully be the only time I wimp out and use the cat as a subject for a blog post.

People seem to be recording some sort of video here at Spot. I should make my escape before I am caught on film...
